Classical, Instrumental and Gospel Medley

Empower The Children of Haiti

Haitian Americans in Action (HAIA) presents “A Medley of Classical Instrumental and Gospel Music at Carnegie Hall”.  We were inspired to organize this extraordinary event to increase public awareness about the humanitarian activities that our organization, and other non-profit sister organizations are undergoing in Haiti to change the lives of the restavek children. We also thought that it would be a great opportunity to showcase the talents of our renowned Haitian artists living in the New York City area. Our dream expanded beyond imagination when a variety of non- Haitian descent artists have decided to join hands with us in this great endeavor. Hence, This event is not only a medley of music but it is also a medley of performers and guests from all over the world united by their great philanthropy for a noble cause.

The Haitian-Americans in Action Organization was formed in 2010 with Haitian-Americans whose sole purpose was to change the lives of Haitians living in the New York City communities and in Haiti. We are a non-profit, self-funded organization that has been in existence for 9 years. We have managed to accomplish great deeds with our limited funding, and have witnessed the difference that it makes in the lives of  people. Our organization provides community based programs such as Health Fair, Forums and Seminars on Immigration, Free Referral to government agencies and other community-based organizations. We provide school materials and funding to schools and charity organizations in Haiti. We have organized Food and Clothing Distribution in Haiti and in the Dominican Republic. We have worked with the French Embassy to offer French Heritage Language classes to francophone students for 2 years. A program that we plan to bring back in the year 2020. We also would like to be able to open free ESL classes to adults living in the Brooklyn area.

The proceeds of the concert will benefit Haitian-Americans in Action Inc. (HAIA), Making the Impossible Possible (MIPO), and Beyond Borders in their efforts to end child slavery. The MIPO organization makes the impossible possible by providing school supplies, food and clothes to children in Haiti, whose parents cannot afford the costs of tuition, school supplies and other necessities. Beyond Borders is a US-based non-profit registered in Haiti that supports a range of community-driven, movement building development programs. Among the programs we point out their work to build the movement to end child slavery in Haiti. Beyond Borders’ movement to end child slavery works in Haitian communities to protect children and help families keep their kids at home instead of sending them away. Every year, parents who cannot afford school tuition or don’t see a hopeful future for their children, make the difficult decision to send their child away to live with another family, often in another city or town where there are more opportunities for their children. Parents believe these families will take care of their children, provide food and shelter and enroll their children in school. Instead, these children are often enslaved, forced to work, abused and never sent to school.

Unfortunately, about 250,000 children in Haiti are trapped in this form of modern-day slavery called restavèk. Beyond Borders staff, partners and volunteer activists have prevented thousands of children from being sent away into slavery and they are actively working to reunite children who have been sent away and enroll them into quality local schools. Beyond Borders’ also works to reduce the risk factors that cause parents to send their children away by supporting parents through an 18-month food security-livelihoods program that provides them with the resources families need to build a new home with clean water and sanitation, create a sustainable livelihood, and ensure their children are enrolled in school.

Indeed, Haitian-Americans in Action, Make The Impossible Possible and Beyond Borders invite you to be a part of the Ending Social Injustice Movement in Haiti. We count on you and your support to continue empowering the children of Haiti with resources that they need to get themselves out of poverty and to live life to the fullest. Besides being part of a great humanitarian effort, you will enjoy an amazing concert at a world class venue. Our performers will take your breath away with their stunning performances. You will appreciate the incredible talents of The Altino Brothers, Asher Laub, Susan Aquila, Sheimyrah Mighty, Michael Gayle, Deer Park Dream Dancers, Voice of Worship, Oliva Nicole Soprano, Noreen Greenwood, E- Uneek Kebreau and the Eben Ezer SDA Youth Gospel Group. Performers Biographical Materials

THE ALTINO BROTHERS

Virtuoso pianists, Nerva and Robenson Altino are incredibly talented, they perform at the piano with a dazzling technique, a unique sound, and have a compelling life story. Their Father, Jean Lecome Altino was seeking a better life for his family, and left Haiti in a banana boat for the United States. After being at sea for over over 60 days, he finally landed ashore and settled in the Bahamas. After two years of residence there, he eventually made it to the US where he later sent for his wife and two sons.

The Altino Brothers' love for music was fostered both inside and outside of their home. Jean Lecome Altino, who is an amateur pianist, purchased a piano and began teaching his sons his beloved craft. Each morning the Brothers woke up to the sound of their father playing the great masters of classical music, including Mozart.

At a young age Nerva and Robenson watched piano greats Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubenstein, and Andre Watts on public television which affirmed their decision to become concert pianists. The music scene in New York provided the Altino Brothers with exposure to a variety of music genres including classical, jazz, and R&B. While attending Church, Nerva and Robenson were also inspired by hymns and spirituals.

At 18 years of age, Nerva continued his quest for excellence in music by attending Atlantic Union College, and studied piano with, Dr. Kaestner Robertson, and Roy Imperio. After completing his studies at AUC, he was accepted in the Master's program at the Manhattan School of Music, where he majored in piano performance.

Robenson soon followed in the footsteps of his older brother, and went directly to The Manhattan School of Music for his undergraduate studies where he studied piano with world renown piano pedagogues Solomon Mokowsky and Sheryl Canellakis.  In addition to his piano studies, Robenson also pursued training in choral conducting. In May of 2001, both Brothers received their Masters Degrees in piano performance from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. This accomplishment was the culmination of discipline and dedication they attained early during their formative years, as they each practiced an average 5-7 hours daily, this eventually developed into an innovative style and virtuosic technique at the piano.

The Altino Brothers dynamic concerts have earned them rave reviews for their interpretations of the classical masters such as Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, and for their own creative and innovative renditions of well-known traditional favorites. Their performances at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, and Alice Tully Hall were embraced by exemplary reviews. Their multi-genre repertoire combines jazz idioms, classical motifs, with Gospel and Caribbean rhythms, which make their performances memorable, inspirational, and very entertaining.

The Altino Brothers have appeared on numerous television shows/programs, including: CBS NY Sunday Morning Show, NBC's Today Show Positively Black, TBN Hour of Power, and others. They have also performed in Concert Halls, Colleges/Universities, and Churches throughout the US, Puerto-Rico, and China, which include Lincoln Center, Yale University's Woolsey Hall, Shanghai Symphony Hall, Mechanics Hall, Luis A. Ferre Performing Arts Center, The Congressional Black Caucus Prayer Breakfast, The Library of Congress, Christian Cultural Center, and most recently, a Month long performance tour in China, including performances in Beijing, Shanghai, and Chong Xing.

Nerva is also a gifted composer and arranger, in 2008, he wrote an original sacred cantata, "The Second Coming" based on the Biblical books of Daniel, Mathew, and Revelation, which debuted to a capacity crowd at The Riverside Church in New York City, and received enthusiastic reviews from New York music critics. In 2015, Nerva gave the world premiere of his newly composed double piano concerto at Carnegie Hall's Isaac Stern Auditorium, featuring both Altino Brothers as piano soloists, in front of a capacity crowd. The piece is based on the "Battle Hymn of the Republic", which is dedicated to the memory of all those who lost their lives during the terror attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.

Noreen Greenwood

Country of Origin: Jamaica

I began singing publicly at the tender age of six (6) years accompanying my Dad and Mom around the island of Jamaica singing with my Dad’s band at many Gospel concerts and local churches. Since then, I continue to use this God-given gift at every opportunity I am called to share this beautiful instrument with others in service for my Lord. In September 1993, I pursued a one-year Voice program at the Jamaica School of Music under the tutelage of Mrs. Pauline Forrest-Watson, a noted soprano vocalist, and this training helped me to use the gift more efficiently. I have been blessed with many amazing opportunities to spread the Good News in song across the island of Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Barbados, the United Kingdom, the USVI, and the USA. Singing is my life string that pulls me closer to my Creator, where I am able to bask in His glory and feel His love and compassion, and experience His ever-present presence in my life. Singing for God is my consuming fire. I am daily refined through the gift of song and I thank God each day for loaning me this “big” and amazing gift that I may share Him with others in whatever small or great way. I am humbled and honored to be one of the many vessels He has chosen upon whom to bestow this beautiful gift. I Love the Lord, I Love to Sing, but most of all, I Love to SING for the LORD. It is my soul’s desire and ultimate purpose to behold Him when He returns, and to dwell with Him for eternity when He shall come to take His children to the New Jerusalem, my new home, where I will sing with the angelic chorus lifting our voices in praise to the Most High. Please keep me in your prayers as I continue to do His will, until that day.
